Amputee and SUP (story of Eric Moriarty)

Picture

I was first introduced to SUP boarding at the Paddle Fenwick event in June.  I had zero experience but was curious to see if I could do SUP being an amputee.  I lost my leg through the knee due to an injury I suffered in the Army.  Needless to say it was challenging to attempt to SUP having no experience and only one leg.  However, despite the challenge I was encouraged because I could get to a standing position and paddle a little bit before falling.  Fortunately, the Operation Second Chance tent was set up right beside the Walk on Water Ocean City, Md. tent. I met Ron and started talking to him about SUP boarding and the challenges I had the day before.

I knew that SUP boarding would be challenging but not impossible.  Ron offered to help me figure out techniques that work with my disability.  About a month later I met Ron in Ocean City and was introduced to Sandy.  Ron and Sandy worked with me for hours and taught me the basics to SUP boarding.  By the end of the day I could stand up, paddle and feel comfortable on the board.  I knew that I could eventually stand up and get the board to move after my introduction at Paddle Fenwick.  I did not know that I would progress to the point of standing and paddling for the distances as I did during the instruction provided by Ron and Sandy.  The accomplishment may seem menial to some people but to me it was a big accomplishment. These guys are skilled and knowledgeable about SUP boarding.

Now that I know that I can SUP board despite my disability, there is more I want to do with the sport.  Eventually I would like to enter into some races and help other injured people into the sport of SUP boarding.  I feel this is a great way to improve balance, increase strength, and boost confidence not only for injured people but for everyone.  I hope to keep in touch with Ron and Sandy and continue to learn from them and continue to improve my SUP boarding ability.  I would also like to help introduce people with disabilities to SUP.  Hopefully people can see my story and find inspiration to try something they may have thought was too difficult to attempt.
